Today was an enlightening experience. For the first time, I experienced what it is like to be deaf…kinda…I wore earplugs…it is the closest I can get. But even with earplugs it was a difficult time.
First of all we did a debate style conversation and I had no idea what was going on because no one used ASL (my guess is no one knows how) and I could hardly hear them. I was wearing only earplugs so I could at least somewhat understand what was happening. But I can only imagine how difficult that situation would have been if I was 100% deaf. Not understanding also made it hard for me to participate in the conversations that were taking place. Later on in the class, we watched a video (I had taken out my earplugs at this point) but as we were watching, I realized that there were no subtitles, so again if I were to actually be deaf, I would again have had no idea what was going on or what the video was about.
After today, I have realized how much you can actually miss out on when you are deaf, especially when no one arounds you know ASL. I will admit I am one of those people and that is something that I will need to look into changing.
